TV Review: Fallen Idols

Paris Hilton plays demon in this very funny episode.
I guess the Paris Hilton haters got what they’ve been chanting for some time during The CW’s SUPERNATURAL this week – off with her head.

First off, let me thank Abbie Bernstein for providing her little bit of magic last week to SUPERNATURAL reviewing as I was out of town.

I was curious about how the creators were going to work in a killer Abraham Lincoln into the show after they revealed he would be one of the bad guys during Season Five at San Diego Comic Con. I should have known that it was going to be a demon inhabiting the image of Lincoln (and James Dean, Ghandi, and Paris Hilton) that would be the culprit.

A series of bizarre murders has Dean (Jensen Ackles) call for backup in the form of his estranged brother, Sam (Jared Padelicki) – who was looking to get back with Dean because they’re brothers and have shared far too much for them not to be together fighting evil. After some investigation, they discover that not only had Lincoln killed someone, but James Dean as well.

TV Review: The End

Dean goes back to the future to get a taste of how bad things can get in a pretty good episode.

On a show like SUPERNATURAL that’s become about the apocalypse, an episode entitled “The End” is bound to intrigue, especially when it’s only episode four into a twenty-two-episode season. Turns out the name refers to a hypothetical future in 2014. Zachariah zaps Dean forward in an attempt to convince him to agree to become the living vessel of the Archangel Michael (a plot thread that’s been going on for awhile now). Dean finds a world devastated by the demonic Croatoan virus (think 28 DAYS LATER), with a stoned, mostly powerless Castiel and an even more badass future version of himself.

This IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE-style episode is largely a showcase for Jensen Ackles, who has a number of dramatic scenes opposite himself, and does a good job of differentiating between “our” Dean and his bitter future counterpart. Although he has much less screen time, Jared Padalecki likewise makes the most of some fairly unusual scenes. Kurt Fuller is as always smarmily great as Zachariah and Rob Benedict contributes some brief fun as Chuck the Prophet.

TV Review: Free To Be You and Me

A disappointing episode until the last five minutes when a bombshell is dropped.

I can’t hide my disappointment that the scrumptious Adrianne Palicki was only in a cameo in this episode of SUPERNATURAL. I was expecting her to be in the episode as more than just a vessel for Lucifer. I was hoping that she would be part of the show for a number of episodes. I guess I was hoping she’d join the team for a number of episodes before going away. But that’s my own selfish desire to see her on camera more.

But alas I guess that’s someone I’ll have to live with.

TV Review: Sympathy for the Devil

A good kick off to what should be an action packed and emotionally draining season.

“What I do have is a GED and a give ‘em hell attitude.” – Dean (Jensen Ackles) on SUPERNATURAL “Sympathy for the Devil”

This was certainly beat up on the Winchester brothers episode. From the beginning to the end, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean were abused by angels, by demons and everything in-between. But what “Sympathy for the Devil” really did was set up the fifth season and what we will be seeing from the show.

Mainly, this season will follow the Winchester brothers fighting against both the powers of so-called good (the angels) and those of so-called bad (the demons and Lucifer). Ah, but we got a glimpse into a possible third party in all of this. Something that had yet to make its appearance known so far in the mythology of the series. I say “its” because we are talking about God.

Supernatural: Five Important Post-Finale Questions

The only bad part of a Supernatural season fniale is how long fans have to wait for it to return.  Last night Supernatural had one shocking episode that killed off two major characters, had Castiel betray Heaven and saw Lucifer on the rise.

But now fans are left with an entire summer trying to figure out what’s going to happen next.  There are undoubtedly a ton of questions you might have, but here are my five most important questions, and hopefully you can provide your own theories.

Is Sam Back to Normal?
All season Sam was drinking demon blood and Ruby claimed that he would be changed permanently.  However, he did it, became strong enough to kill Lilith, and when Dean showed up, the two seemed back to their usual loving selves.  So is Sam back to being the regular Sammy and was Ruby also lying about turning evil, or did we just not see the full effects of what killing Lilith did to Sam?

TV Review: Lucifer Rising

A decent season finale as next season will be hell on Earth apparently.

Awww man.

I suppose the season finale of SUPERNATURAL “Lucifer Rising” did its job. I am left wanting more. Much more.

But I’m also, admittedly, left a bit disappointed.

As I guess I was expecting to see Dean (Jensen Ackles) play a bigger role, given he has been the centerpiece of the entire season. In fact, he didn’t play much of a role at all. The first half of the episode he is stuck in a holy prison by Zachariah and Castiel in order to protect him from the final leg of the journey that this season has been about – primarily the unlocking of the gates to hell in order to free Lucifer and unleash the apocalypse on Earth.

We quickly are given what many of you have already deduced – the angels are just as bad as the demons they are fighting again. Zachariah tells Dean that all but one seal has fallen and that final seal has to do with Lilith. But Dean isn’t going to stop and kill Lilith and save Sam (Jared Padalecki) because the angels don’t want him to do anything. In fact, they want the seals broken. They want the apocalypse.

TV Review: When the Levees Break

In the penultimate episode of the season, Sam and Dean go at it like never before

This was a long time coming.

The split between Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). Ever since “Sex and Violence” when the Siren turned the two against each other and had them fight it out over its affection opening up a slew of worms between the two, we knew this day was coming.

“You walk out that door don’t you ever come back” the same line daddy Winchester used to Dean long ago was a fitting end to the episode.

A split between the brothers that’s as far as it ever has been. Sure they have had their differences before even to the point of splitting up the duo. But it has never been like this. Sam leaving in a huff, off to supposedly kill Lilith for revenge for sending Dean to hell and in order the stop the apocalypse from coming.  Sam thinks that Ruby is on the same page and is tracking Lilith down in order for Sam to have the confrontation with her and presumably destroy her.

TV Review: The Rapture

Spotlight on Castiel shows a new side to the angel and reveals Sam’s secret.

This was quite a different episode of SUPERNATURAL.

From the perspective as we learned about the sacrifices being made in the battle between Heaven and Hell, particular from the point of Castiel (Mischa Collins), who leaves his host body, Jimmy, in “The Rapture” and gets forced back to Heaven.

Jimmy awakens a year after being possessed by Castiel and has one thing on his mind. Seek out his family he left behind after agreeing to become a host vessel for an angel (which we see happen over the course of a number of flashbacks during the episode).  And it was a bittersweet reunion with his family tentative of him after a year away but the moments with his daughter and wife were touching and sad given he really didn’t know what he was in for when he signed up for the post, obviously.

Of course, once word gets out that an empty vessel is going back home the demons come hunting but luckily Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are searching for Castiel after he escapes them and they arrive just in time to stop the demons from killing Jimmy/Castiel and his family. But when a demon possesses his wife, things change and the Winchester brothers and the former vessel fight to save them.
