A merely OK episode as Sam gets his own FREAKY FRIDAY.
“Either you start talking or I start water boarding.” – Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) on SUPERNATURAL “Swap Meat”
Well that was not you’re A-typical SUPERNATURAL episode. Not by a long shot.
The funniest part of “Swap Meat” was the foreboding music that played throughout the episode. Totally out of place given the circumstances of the episode and the hilarious situations that Sam (Jared Padaleki) was placed in – a FREAKY FRIDAY body swap.
But I guess given the nefarious intentions of some of the young kid’s friends in the episode, I guess a case could be made for the droning music. Still, I found it funny that it was playing when Sam was at school as the boy or when the boy (as Sam) was totally out of character for Sam and saying a number of crazy stuff that he’d never say.
A demon is feasting on mental patients and the Winchester brothers check themselves in.
Something is feeding on crazies at a mental facility and the Winchester brothers go in to investigate on the latest episode of SUPERNATURAL, entitled “Sam, Interrupted.”
And it was a straight stand-alone episode pretty much outside the mythology of the series that we have seen so far this season with the rise of Lucifer and hell on Earth coming.
Now, we did get a good bit of revelations about why Sam (Jared Padalecki) is just so damn angry all the time and he comes to the realization that it is his fault, he has been blaming everyone and everything for his own issues – the demon blood, Ruby, the apocalypse, name it. Instead, he should be blaming himself for having gotten himself into this situation and what’s happening everywhere.
That came at the end and it is almost too bad that they didn’t focus on the mythology a bit more in the first episodes since November since while we didn’t forget, so much has happened it would be nice to see a little progression of the series.
Can you believe we have to wait almost two months for a new episode of Supernatural, especially after yesterday’s heartbreaker “Abandon All Hope”? The wait is going to be positively gruesome, but to keep, well, hope alive during the holidays, we gathered up the answers some of your burning SPN fan Q’s.
So what’s the biggest question of all right now in the Supernatural-verse? For our money it’s this: Why is God so darn laissez-faire in his approach to the Apocalypse? The Winchesters could really use a hand mopping up all the fire and brimstone that’s raining down on Earth right now! Come on, big man! Show your face!
So, will there be a deus ex machina in season five of Supernatural? Here’s what we’re hearing:
An extremely brutal and dark episode ending the fall finale in superb fashion
Wow, what a brutal episode of SUPERNATURAL.
I don’t think we’ve seen an episode like “Abandon All Hope” in quite a long time: Just completely devastating and dark from start to finish.
And what a perfect title, as hope certainly seems as if it is dwindling as friends are lost, the Angel of Death returns to Earth, an entire town is wiped off the face of the planet and Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) promising that Sam (Jared Padalecki) will accept his offer to be his vessel in six months.
It is a lot to digest given what we just saw but let’s try to break it down.
A fun episode with some new information about why the Winchester brothers were chosen as vessels.
This was my favorite episode of the fifth season of SUPERNATURAL.
Not only did “Changing Channels” offer up some hysterical comedic moments as Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are thrown into a game by an apparent Trickster – that plays pranks on humans by creating a false reality with deadly consequences – but it also offered some pretty good information to the mythology of Season Five. Specifically, why the Winchester Brothers are the chosen ones as the vessels for the battle between Heaven and Hell and how it was inevitable.
Investigating some odd appearances happening in Ohio, the Winchester Brothers – having dealt once with the Trickster already – believe he’s back and causing havoc. They figure that if they convince the Trickster to come to their side, maybe they can prevent the coming apocalypse. But before that happens, the Trickster transports them into a game where they must play various parts of television programs or face the consequences.
I was hard on “The Curious Case of Dean Winchester,” the latest new episode of Supernatural, because I felt the story and, in particular, the villains didn’t work. An episode needs a strong antagonist, someone viewers can connect with, which is why I was ecstatic that Warner Brothers sent critics an advanced copy of next week’s brand new Supernatural episode, “Changing Channels.”
Like any good fan, I watched it as soon as possible, and while you won’t find any major spoilers in this review, I can tell you that it is, hands down, the best episode of the season. Of course, I’m a little biased. (more…)
A very funny episode that sees Dean age 50 years and Sam try his hand at Texas Hold ‘Em.
Haha, I love the funny episodes of SUPERNATURAL. I know that many fans of the show don’t really like them because they stray from the mythology of the show – this year continuing the battle between Heaven and Hell – but for me, this is all part of the fun.
“The Curious Case of Dean Winchester” was funnier than many sitcoms on networks with a number of great one-liners and a duo of old Dean (Chad Everett) and Bobby (Jim Beaver) could give GRUMPY OLD MEN a run for their money.
They always do a good job of bundling the funny episodes together so they don’t take too much away from the mythology (although two weeks ago in the “I Believe the Children Are Our Future” episode included a big dose of mythology in the second half) and usually get back on track after two or three of them so not to piss off the fan base too much that roll their eyes at the funny stuff. Sorry, next week also looks to be one of them.
A very funny episode turns serious and with massive consquences to the war between Heaven and Hell.
I know some people don’t like the comedic one-shot episodes on SUPERNATURAL. But I simply love them. They give the writers a chance to branch out and explore their creative and comedic sides in ways the usual mytharc’s are able to do. Sure they have some great humor from Dean (Jensen Ackles) but not in the same way these do.
In “I Believe the Children Are Our Future” (an obvious shout out to the deceased King of Pop) we got a mixture of both – a one-shot episode that turned serious quick and introduced us to a possible significant player in the battle between Heaven and Hell.
And wow is Jesse – a half human/half demon hybrid conceived and born by a demon after it took over a poor Nebraska woman – one powerful player in the war. With a word, he can do anything. Whatever he believes in a certain radius becomes reality. And we see it happen as a shock button becomes an electrocution device, pop rocks and soda causes ulcers, itching powder makes you claw your brains out and the tooth fairy is one mean bastard that wears a pink tutu.
