TV Review: The Curious Case of Dean Winchester

A very funny episode that sees Dean age 50 years and Sam try his hand at Texas Hold ‘Em.

Haha, I love the funny episodes of SUPERNATURAL. I know that many fans of the show don’t really like them because they stray from the mythology of the show – this year continuing the battle between Heaven and Hell – but for me, this is all part of the fun.

“The Curious Case of Dean Winchester” was funnier than many sitcoms on networks with a number of great one-liners and a duo of old Dean (Chad Everett) and Bobby (Jim Beaver) could give GRUMPY OLD MEN a run for their money.

They always do a good job of bundling the funny episodes together so they don’t take too much away from the mythology (although two weeks ago in the “I Believe the Children Are Our Future” episode included a big dose of mythology in the second half) and usually get back on track after two or three of them so not to piss off the fan base too much that roll their eyes at the funny stuff. Sorry, next week also looks to be one of them.

This episode was interesting as well beyond the comedy because it featured a he-witch that actually wasn’t all that evil. He wasn’t all that good, mind you, but given the level of nasty characters this show has featured over the years, Patrick (Hal Ozsan) was rather friendly. In fact, at one point he even gave an old man a few years to live just out of the kindness of his heart (supposedly). He also said many times he wasn’t a killer and advised people against playing the game of poker because of the stakes involved.

See Patrick plays a high stake game of Texas Hold’em poker. But instead of money, the currency is years. Years on your life. You lose 10 years in the game, you age 10 years. You win 25 years and an old man becomes young again.

When Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate the death of a man that rapidly aged and died, they discover that something is fishy involving people winning and losing years on their lives. The situation becomes more complicated when Bobby tries to win some years on his own life in order to get out of the wheel chair and loses 25 years. Dean feels like he has no choice but to play to win those years back. Instead, he loses 50 years and instantly becomes an old man.

After discovering the he-witch (which I always thought was called a warlock but whatever) was to blame and not magic chips, Sam goes all in and is forced to play the game against Patrick to win Dean’s years back on his life.

The thing I loved the most about this was that Everett that played the older Dean was freaking amazing. He captured Dean perfectly right down to his crotchetiness and womanizing. And it would totally be like Dean to complain the entire time in having to climb stairs, or dig up a grave, or stop eating cheeseburgers and it was just hilariously awesome.

I look forward to next week’s episode as the Winchester boys take on classic television shows.
