CW President Optimistic About More ‘Supernatural’

At yesterday’s upfront presentation for the Fall schedule, CW President Dawn Ostroff had the difficult task of being optimistic about some of the struggling network’s long-running shows.

From the beginning, creator Eric Kripke has said that he has a five-year plan for the series, which would make this upcoming season the last one.  Ostroff isn’t so quick to give up, however, saying that nothing is certain and they’ll just have to see what happens.

On the bright side, Ostroff was complimentary of the creative direction the show went this season with the angels, and more importantly for a network president, she was pleased with how this effected the ratings.  The average episode rating went up from last season and the season 4 premiere, “Lazarus Rising,” was the show’s highest rated episode since the first season.

Does this mean Supernatural is definitely coming back for season 6?  Certainly not.  It means that the door is not closed so if this year Supernatural continues to grow and do even better, Ostroff wouldn’t mind keeping a show on the rise over shows that are going down.

I’m sorry but the way the show is going, in the direction it’s going, how can they extend it to two or even three more seasons? I think it’s so funny how now CW execs realize that Supernatural is the best show on the network now, after they didn’t give it much love for three straight seasons. They have put so much promotion and press into the ridiculous shows like Gossip Girl and 90210 that they didn’t recognize what a great show SPN is. I think they now know that after SPN and Smallville end their series, the CW will probably go away with these shows. Too little, too late Ostroff. Like the saying goes, you don’t know what you got, ’til it’s gone.

Totally agree with you! I mean, of course I would love the show to go on for 20 years. Fact is, we have this great opportunity to watch our faves weekly, we know they love what they are doing, that they get paid – as ridiculous as it sounds but you have to admit, that both haven’t had much “luck” with previous projects, esp. movie related. But like Jensen already said, they would have to offer him a good pay check to go on and for me this means, he loves the show too much to let it go on after such an über-enjoyable season which I’m sure season 5 is going to be.
